Decommissioning

The decommissioning of a bog will facilitate the enhanced rehabilitation of an area.  Decommissioning covers all areas of general clean-up within the bogs including: removal of stock (harvested peat), removal of associated machinery, bog pumps infrastructure and waste material, lifting of railway lines and railbed materials, removal of stockpile protection, portacabins, buildings, unused materials, production plant and equipment. These materials will be either be removed back into stores, recycled or disposed of through permitted waste contractors, with records maintained as required under condition 7 of the IPC Licence.

Prior to the surrender of the licence, Bord na Móna must demonstrate to the Environmental Protection Agency that it has complied with condition-10 of the licence and decommissioned, rendered safe or removed for disposal/recovery, any soil, subsoils, buildings, plant or equipment, or any waste, materials or substances or other matter contained therein or thereon, that may result in environmental pollution.
